For Afghan women, occupation is worse than Taliban

afgan_kadin_452442207.jpgOne of the main arguments raised by the US and NATO to “legitimize” the invasion of Afghanistan was that the West would not be indifferent to the backwardness of this country, and civilization should be introduced to Afghans. However, the new laws in Afghanistan are even worse than Taliban for Afghan women.

soL (INTERNATIONAL NEWS) The recently adopted civil law by Afghan President Hamid Kharzai is a nightmare for Afghan women.

The law enforced by Kharzai in March legalizes rape of women in marriage and prohibits women to step outside the house without permission of their husbands. According to the law, women can only look for work, go to the hospital or school on their husbands’ permission. The law also abandons the women to reject having sexual intercourse with their husbands. The children can only be under the guardianship of the father or the grandfather according to the new civil law.

A Senator of the Afghan Parliament, Humeira Namati, said that the law is “even worse than during the Taliban”. Emphasizing that the law had been passed with unprecedented speed without much discussion, another female MP Shinkai Zahine Karokail said, “They wanted to pass the law almost like a secret negotiation. There were many points we would like to amend, but they did not allow us to discuss because Kharzai wants to please the Shia population before the election.”

The final document of the law has still not been made public. The Afghan Minister of Justice confirms that the law was signed by Kharzai in March, but they would not declare it in full due to certain “technical problems”.

“Women are a little bit weaker…”
The leader of the Hazara Party, the most important representative of the minority Kharzai wants to please, Ustad Mohammad Akbari said, “Men and women have equal rights under Islam, but there are differences in the way men and women are created. Men are stronger and women are a little bit weaker; you do not see women firefighters even in the West.”

Although several human rights and women’s organizations, some of which are affiliated with the United Nations, reacted to the law, none of the western countries objects to this situation as they know that the supreme authority in Afghanistan is the US.
